Frequently asked questions

What is the course?

The Empowered Nurse Toolkit is a six-week online course designed specifically for nurses. It is self-paced, meaning you can work through the modules in your own time.

Each week, you are given new skills to effectively manage the everyday stresses and challenges of your role and life in general.

This happens through watching short, informative and engaging videos and completing practical written and audio exercises. Course users can come back to the content as much as they need to.

The course contains practical examples of some of the common stresses and challenges nurses may experience, and how to overcome them.

Who is it for?

The course is aimed at nurses of any professional level and any area of nursing, as long as you have some hands-on experience of working in healthcare/mental health. This means nursing students, nursing associates, RNs and more senior nurses alike.

The course requires you to watch videos, practice exercises and complete worksheets and journalling exercises. It is therefore suited to people who have an interest in a self-study approach to personal development.

As the course contains 6 weeks of content, it will be ideal for people who have a high level of motivation and are confident they can maintain this motivation over extended periods. In other words, the course requires self-discipline to see the benefits.

What does the course involve?

The course includes 6 weeks of material. Once enrolled, you can work through these at your own pace. We recommend scheduling out 1 hour per week in your diary at the same time to come back to the course and complete the material.

Daily practice

To get the most benefit, you will need to commit to some additional time each day to practice the skills you learn in this program. We would recommend around 10 minutes of time each day for such practice. Some of these are highly brief skills you can use “on-the-go” during your day, such as brief breathing exercises.

Who else is on the course?

There will be other nurses participating in this program. You can connect and share your experiences with these nurses in our secure learning platform via the Community features.

Can I ask questions throughout?

Yes. You will have the opportunity to post questions to the Community board during the course. These will be answered by Dr Nathan Illman, Clinical Psychologist and creator of the course.

Tracking your progress

There are several wellbeing questionnaire measures we collect as part of this program. This helps us see in anonymised format, how beneficial the program is for people.

Below we present some of the expected benefits of doing this course.

What are the expected benefits of doing this course?

Learning effective tools to manage stress can have many benefits. Each person is different, but if you were to take the course and fully engage in the content, you might expect to see some of the following:

  • Feeling less burdened by the emotional aspects of your job when you go home after work.

  • Improved physical health, including lower rates of common illnesses (like colds or flu) and therefore more days each month to fully feel yourself.

  • Reduced burden of existing health conditions (e.g. chronic pain), leading to more physical and mental energy to focus on things that matter to you.

  • Better stress coping can help you progress in your career. Examples of this can be an improved ability to manage the stress and anxiety of job interviews, and also managing the stress of change that comes with new roles.

  • Improved sleep due to reduced anxiety, worry and stress. This helps with feeling more energized and “switched on” during the day.

  • When we’re better rested and less stressed, we generally find it easier to stick to a healthier lifestyle, too. It’s easier to resist high fat or sugary foods, alcohol and other things we often take to get rid of unpleasant stressful feelings. That means we can feel better about ourselves and our bodies.

  • You may feel clearer and sharper mentally. This can mean being more accurate, efficient, organized and even creative.

  • When we’re less stressed, it’s easier to connect with people. Better stress coping generally helps improve our relationships with people that matter to us such as patients, service users, colleagues, friends and family..

  • You may see an improved ability to keep your cool and control your emotions. This tends to mean we are less snappy and irritable with those around us.

  • Finally, we’d expect you would experience more positive emotions at home and work, such as happiness, gratitude and a feeling of confidence in yourself. This may mean that you dread coming into work less, and are better able to focus on the things that give you pleasure and meaning in your role.
